Let’s be honest: nobody likes standing in long queues at Aadhaar Seva Kendras. It consumes time, energy, and patience. But keeping your mobile number updated in your Aadhaar is crucial for everything from banking to OTP verifications.
The good news? You can now update your mobile number directly from your smartphone without visiting a center. The process uses Face Authentication technology, making it much easier than before.
However, there is a small catch. This specific method works best if you already have your old registered mobile number active to receive the initial login OTP.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
Important Requirements Before You Start
Before you open the app, make sure you have the following ready:
• Your Aadhaar Number.
• Your Old Registered Mobile Number: You will need this for the initial login OTP.
• Your New Mobile Number: The one you want to update to (you will need this to verify it).
• Good Lighting: Since this process uses Face Authentication, you need to be in a well-lit room.
• ₹75 Balance: There is a government fee for the update, which you can pay via UPI (PhonePe, Paytm, etc.).
Step-by-Step Process
1. Download the App and Login
First, download the official Aadhaar FaceRD or the specific UIDAI-integrated app shown in the tutorial.
• Open the app and click on “I am ready with my Aadhaar.”
• Enter your Aadhaar number and click continue.
• Note: If you are using a different device than the one with your SIM, the OTP will go to your registered mobile number. Enter that OTP to proceed.
2. Complete Face Authentication
Once logged in, the app will ask for Face Authentication.
• Hold the phone at eye level.
• Blink your eyes naturally as instructed.
• Once the capture is successful, you will be verified. This step might take a moment depending on the server, so be patient!
3. Create a Temporary Pin
You will be asked to create a 6-digit pin. Set a pin that you can easily remember (or use a temporary one just for this session).
4. Navigate to “My Aadhaar Update”
On the dashboard, scroll down or look for the “My Aadhaar Update” section.
• Note: You might see options for Name, Address, or Email listed as “Coming Soon.” Ignore those; the Mobile Number update option should be active. Select it.
5. Enter Mobile Details
This is the most important step.
• The app will ask for your Current (Old) Mobile Number and your New Mobile Number.
• Enter the OTP sent to your current registered number.
• Then, enter your new number and verify the OTP sent to that new SIM.
6. Final Face Verification
To confirm that it is really you making the change, the app will ask for Face Authentication one last time. Follow the same process as step 2.
7. Make the Payment
Once verified, you will be taken to the payment page.
• The fee for the update is ₹75.
• Click “Confirm and Pay.”
• Select your preferred payment method (PhonePe is usually the easiest) and complete the transaction.
8. Download Receipt & Wait
After the payment is successful, you will receive an SRN (Service Request Number). Save this number! You can use it to track your status.
How long does it take?
Usually, the update happens within 24 hours, though sometimes it can be instant.
Conclusion
And that’s it! You have successfully submitted a request to change your Aadhaar mobile number without stepping foot outside your house.
If you don’t have a registered mobile number at all, this process might not work for you as you need that first OTP to log in. For those cases, stay tuned—I will be covering a solution for non-registered numbers in an upcoming post!
