Comprehensive Guide: Updating Aadhaar Mobile Number via Face Authentication (2025)

Updating demographic details in Aadhaar, particularly the mobile number, has historically required a physical visit to a Permanent Enrollment Center (PEC). However, with the integration of Face Authentication Technology (FaceRD), the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has streamlined this process for residents.

This guide details the technical workflow to update your mobile number from home using the new mobile application interface, specifically for users who still have access to their previously registered mobile number.

📋 Prerequisites & System Requirements

Before initiating the update request, ensure you meet the following technical criteria to avoid session timeouts or verification failures:

1. Active Registered Mobile Number: You must have the SIM card currently linked to your Aadhaar inserted in a device to receive the login OTP.

2. New Mobile Number: The new SIM card you wish to link must be active to receive a verification OTP.

3. Android/iOS Device: A smartphone with a functioning front camera (minimum 5MP recommended for clear face capture).

4. FaceRD App Service: Ensure the “Aadhaar FaceRD” service is installed on your device to handle biometric capture.

5. Payment Method: A UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm) or Net Banking to pay the ₹75 service fee.

6. Lighting Conditions: You must be in a well-lit environment with a plain background for the face scanner to work efficiently.

⚙️ Step-by-Step Execution Protocol

Phase 1: Authentication and Login

1. Launch the Application: Open the designated Aadhaar service app.

2. Initial Verification: Select “I am ready with my Aadhaar”. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.

3. OTP Validation: The system will send a One Time Password (OTP) to your existing registered mobile number. Enter this to proceed.

• Note: If the registered SIM is in a different device, check that device for the code.

Phase 2: Biometric Face Capture

1. Face Liveness Detection: The app will initialize the camera. Hold the phone at eye level.

2. Capture Instruction: Follow the on-screen prompts (e.g., “Blink your eyes”). The system uses liveness detection to prevent fraud.

3. Confirmation: Once the face match is successful against the UIDAI database, you will be granted access.

Phase 3: Updating the Mobile Number

1. Navigate to Updates: Locate the “My Aadhaar Update” section. While fields like Name or Address may show as “Coming Soon,” the Mobile Number field is active.

2. Dual Verification:

Step A: Enter your Current Mobile Number. Verify via OTP.

Step B: Enter your New Mobile Number. A separate OTP will be sent to this new SIM. Enter it to verify possession of the new number.

Phase 4: Final Consent & Payment

1. Re-Authentication: The system requires a final Face Authentication scan to digitally sign the update request.

2. Service Fee Payment: You will be redirected to the payment gateway.

Fee: ₹75 (Standard UIDAI update charge).

Method: Select UPI (recommended for speed) or Card/Net Banking.

3. SRN Generation: Upon successful payment, a Service Request Number (SRN) is generated. Save this number immediately for tracking.

🔍 Tracking and Timeline

Processing Time: The update typically reflects within 24 to 48 hours, although it can occur instantaneously depending on server load.

Status Check: You can use the SRN generated in the final step to check the status on the official UIDAI website (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in).

⚠️ Critical Limitations & Troubleshooting

1. The “Lost Number” Scenario

Crucial Note: This method is OTP-dependent. If you have lost your old SIM card and cannot receive the initial login OTP, this online method will not work. In such cases, a physical visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra is mandatory for biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris).

2. Face Authentication Failures

If the app fails to capture your face:

Lighting: Ensure light is falling on your face, not from behind you.

Camera Lens: Wipe the front camera lens to remove smudges.

Stability: Keep the phone steady; do not tilt it.

3. Payment Lags

The payment gateway page may be slow. Do not hit “Back” or “Refresh” once the payment is initiated. If the amount is deducted but the receipt is not generated, wait for 24 hours for the reconciliation.
