How I Turned My 20-Year-Old TV
Into a Smart TV
Watch Netflix, YouTube & JioFiber on your old CRT TV!The Secret Ingredient: The “Magic” Adapter
Do you have a big, bulky “dabba” TV gathering dust in your storeroom? You know, the old 20-year-old CRT televisions that we all grew up with?
Most people think these TVs are electronic waste because they don’t have HDMI ports, Wi-Fi, or apps. But in my latest video, I proved that you don’t need to throw them away. I successfully ran Netflix, YouTube, and Jio AirFiber on a 20-year-old TV, and it worked flawlessly.
The biggest problem with old TVs is that they only understand Analog signals (Red, White, and Yellow cables), while modern devices like the Jio AirFiber Set-Top Box, Amazon Fire Stick, or Laptops send out Digital signals (HDMI). To bridge this gap, you need a specific device called an HDMI to AV (RCA) Converter.
There are two types of converters. Don’t buy “AV to HDMI” (that’s for playing old games on new TVs). You need HDMI to AV (Converts new Fire Sticks/Set-Top Boxes to old TVs). I have linked the correct one below.
Step-by-Step Connection Guide
Here is the exact setup I used in the video to get Netflix running:
1. The Hardware Setup
- Source: A streaming device (like a FireStick, Android Box, or JioFiber).
- Bridge: The HDMI to AV Converter (Link below).
- Destination: The Old CRT TV.
2. Making the Connections
- HDMI Input: Plug the HDMI cable coming from your FireStick or Set-Top Box into the port labeled “HDMI IN” on the white converter box.
- AV Output: Plug your 3-colored cables (Red, White, Yellow) into the “AV OUT” side of the converter. Plug the other end into your TV’s video/audio ports.
- Power Up: These converters need power! Use the included mini-USB cable. Hack: Plug the USB cable directly into the USB port of your Set-Top Box to power it automatically.
3. The “PAL vs NTSC” Switch
On the side of the converter, you will see a tiny switch labeled PAL / NTSC. Set it to PAL. India uses the PAL color system. If you leave it on NTSC, your screen might flicker or show Black & White colors.
The Results: Does it Actually Work?
Once I powered everything on and switched the TV to “AV Mode,” the interface popped up immediately.
- YouTube: Worked perfectly. I searched for my channel and played a video. The audio was synced, and the video played without lag.
- Netflix: I launched Netflix and played Stranger Things. It felt surreal watching a modern 4K web series on a vintage TV screen!
The Only Limitation: Since old TVs do not support HDMI-CEC, the volume buttons on your Fire Stick remote might not change the TV volume. Solution: Set your Set-Top Box volume to 100% and keep your old TV remote handy to adjust the actual loudness.
